christ the reedemer
Christ the Redeemer is a statue in Rio de Janeiro that is an icon of Brazil. The shape of the statue is Jesus Christ, which represents the Christianity in Brazil and a symbol of peace. It is constructed in the year of 1992 and ended in 2006. Heitor da Silva Costa is a local guy who designed the statue, Paul Landowski is the sculpture of the statue and he is a Polish-French guy but the face of the statue is sculpt by Gheorghe Leonida which is a Romanian sculpture. The statue is also one of the 7 wonders of the world in 2007.
Behind the statue there is a lot of interesting history of it. Actually a priest in Brazil around 1850 suggests the statue to honor Princess Isabel but Princess Isabel declined but the first suggestion wants the statue to be in the shape of Princess Isabel. The second suggestion is proposed on 1920 by the Catholic Circle of Rio, to raise money they make an event to build the statue and they succeed and the design also changed to the shape of Jesus Christ they make the hands wide to represent cross and peace.
In February 2008 the statue was struck by lightning and some of the parts broke down to pieces. They held a restoration in Rio de Janeiro for the statue but it struck by lightning again in January 2014.
